Dear 24 Trolls,
When someone is hacked to death or burnt alive or mugged or abused, the comments that generally follows of that of heartfelt sympathy and outrage. These are the comments that get half a million likes. Who wouldn’t agree with that? Of course we’d all love to live in a world where people do not fear for their lives and ice cream was free. Where children can have equal education and politicians actually have “the people’s” best interests in mind and not lining their own fraudy pockets.
So why is it when that when it comes to topics of sexuality and religion and race, our likes and dislikes seem to be so divided?
I'm not going to drone on with a long speech about equality. I would hope that all of you reading this are educated enough and human enough to agree that these controversial subjects are not going to be resolved with heated comments and thumbs up or thumbs down clicks. We are ALL entitled to our own opinions. That is our freedom. Whether you agree with anothers opinion will not change the fact that it exists. Forcing your own sentiments to win an argument will never change the mind of the person you’re trying to oppress with you words.
Practical example: If the gays want to parade around in pink feathers once a year, so long as they are not going to malt pink feathers into my morning cereal – let them. What difference to me is it if gays marry or not? If I don’t want gay marriage, I simply don’t marry a gay person. Their right to live as they want holds no consequence to my life or my belief system. So why all the big fuss?
Believe it or not, racism still exists. It exists in the hearts of fearful and hateful people. But the good news is that the majority of us average joes, we are not hateful and fearful, but rather optimistic about the future of our country.
Next time you see someone walking down the street instead of seeing them for what colour they are, try to figure out whether their favourite flavor jelly bean is. We all have one. Maybe wonder to yourself if they are peanut butter likers or strawberry jam supporters. Surely their carbon footprint is of more consequence to you than the colour of their skin? Instead of asking yourself is that guy coloured or black, maybe wonder if he drive hybrid or diesel. I am not saying that carbon emission is something that occupies my conscience, my point is that looking after the environment affects us both and is far more significant to me than the colour of their skin will ever be.
What are you doing to better the world you live in? The world I live in? The world the people you love the most live in? If you think a well worded retort will change someone else’s values and principles or political standing or sexuality then you are sadly mistaken. Instead of being a troll, surfing the internet looking for opportunities to enforce your agenda, consider for a moment your opinions and beliefs and agenda’s are as important to you as my middle name. (For those needing an explanation there.. “my middle name” is something most important to me, as it defines me and is printed in my passport therefore making it a rather important piece of visa information however, that important little piece of information to you is as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.)
Consider the cost of your "opinions". Be the joy you want to see in the world and I promise you, you will see more joy in the world.
