I am a huge fan!
I did some reading up the other day and traced your beginnings to 1570 AD. You went by many names in the old world. “Democratie” – as given to you by Middle French, “Democratia”, from Medieval Latin and “Demokratia” by the Greeks.
If I understand your basic principal correctly, your pure definition is the popular choice of leadership or governance by the common people, who entrust those chosen by the people to do what’s best for the people. It also means that those who are chosen to lead or govern the people, listen to the people who placed their trust in the leaders and respect those they serve.
Unfortunately, we have only seen glimmers of you in our country. This country has had a torrid past when it comes to what is best and fair for all who share it. Apartheid was a perversion of all and any principles meant to allow you to thrive as you should have.
Thankfully, Apartheid came to an end. Once the dust had settled, there was a clear sign that things were made ready for your permanent arrival. Alas, what started out as nation building and reconciliation, swiftly turned into a farce.
Those who were chosen to lead the country to freedom and build from there, have done everything but allow you to thrive. The common masses have begged, pleaded and rioted, begging for the leadership of the day to provide what had been promised.
This has since become the norm. Everything the people of South Africa plead for, is ignored by those in power and dismissed with insolence and contempt. The taxed have become overburdened, the land that is meant to thrive grows darker every day. The leaders who were chosen to do what is right for everyone concerned, have become power hungry, greedy and corrupt. Instead of giving answers to the people for unfulfilled promises, we are told constant lies. Our questions are blatantly ignored or a poor attempt is made to appease the masses.
Instead of taking accountability for their failings, our leaders manipulate their people, turning us against one another. As a result, many people have misplaced their anger toward one another, when it is glaringly obvious that our leaders are to blame.
I wish for the day when your potential is truly realized in South Africa. Until then, e-tolls will be forced upon us. Corruption and fraud will continue to cause rot and decay. Crime will flourish even more (if that is humanly possible) and essentially we will all be left in ruins.
I hope this reaches you wherever you are. If it does, please let “Accountability” know that we miss her too.
