I don’t buy this pseudo-democracy we’re supposedly living in in these post-Apartheid days. I really don’t. It’s more of an African-flavoured democracy if you ask me. We pay lip service to the idea of democracy but continually fail in its execution.
Me and my partner, Marius have been together now for about 12 years. Under this so-called democracy, we’ve been able to enjoy the freedom to live our lifestyles almost as openly as we’d like to.
We still get the occasional bigot brigade of rubberneckers gawking when we make out in restaurants and at school sports days when we’re supporting Marius’s nephew, Stephan, who’s quite the Adonis I have to say.
So as it stands, we’re still not completely free. Sure, we’re out and about, but the freedom to just express ourselves in our way is still not completely tolerable from all people in society. Just think what they’d say if they saw us and our friends frolicking around in the nude in our back garden on a Sunday afternoon? Oh, the horror! But that’s the freedom I’m fighting for.
Also, what’s all this racial-preference with undemocratic initiatives like Affirmative Action and BEE? Firstly, I get lots of action so that’s affirmative! (LOL, I enjoyed that). Secondly, I demand that high government institute, with immediate effect, GEE.
Also, we demand that the government take a long, hard look at same-sex marital laws. We demand FULL rights across the board; through banking, marital contracts and even adoptions so that all of South Africa’s orphaned babies can easily find homes with loving gay families.
On that note, Marius and I have ordered one from a Scandinavian agency so our sparkling white bundle of joy is being shipped soon. We’ll be fetching it from the airport via a travel nanny. Can’t wait!
Marius and I will probably never be wed though, but that’s also a deliberate choice for us as we don’t see the point. We’re quite content as we are, despite our almost disastrous break up last year.
So, today we declare, loud and proud - WE DEMAND MORE GAY RIGHTS!!!
