Demographics of atheism

19 November 2013, 12:38

DEMOGRAPHICS OF ATHEISM:  CONDUCTED BY WIN

                               -GALLUP   --- “INTERNATIONAL.”

It is ironic that the poll carried out in 2010 has hi-lighted many faults in the current demographic  survey carried out so much earlier and in fact rendered unreliable and of little use due to the expansion and contractions of the Religious and Atheist movements and external social changes.

Atheists comprise an estimated 2.01% and the non-religious a further 9,66% of the world population according to the world fact book in 2010.  In East Asia the Atheists and irreligious are the majority outside of East Asia and some European countries.  Atheists and non-believer percentages are typically in the single digits.

It is accepted that Atheism is on the rise around the globe

Atheism is on the rise in the United States and elsewhere while religiosity is declining according to a new worldwide poll.  “The global index of religiosity and Atheism” conducted by (WN – Gallup  international with headquarters in Switzerland found that the number of Americans who say they are religious dropped from 73% in 2005  when the poll was last conducted---to 60%.

Those  who said they were convinced Atheists rose from 1 to 5 % of the people polled said that they don’t consider themselves as a religious person

NON  BELIEVERS

A  University of Tampa Sociologist of religion, told the “religion News services”   He questions the number of Atheists in the United States really grew as the poll suggested.  He suggests that people may be just more comfortable identifying themselves as Atheists.

That view seems consistent with a study conducted by the PEW RESEARCH CENTRE Forum on religion and public life in 2009 showing that 5% of Americans at that time said they did not believe in God or a universal Spirit. But only 24% of the non-believers actually called themselves atheists.

America remains way down on the list of countries for self-reported Atheism.  China tops that list with 47% “convinced” atheists followed by Japan (31%) (Czech republic( 30%),  France (29%)  and South  Korea(15%)

And so we can carry on:  Ironically and what is not clearly understood is that the 2005 gallup poll was carried out and that poll was the precursor for the 2012 poll and the 2010 poll.  So basically what is said is that the Demographics of Atheism may lose some of its values and perceptions with the advent of the GLOBAL INDEX OF RELIGIOSITY AND Atheism.

During the period 2005 to2012 the South African religiosity index changed by—minus 19% one of the largest changes at the time.
