Did JESUS exist?
Why am I writing this article? Was not this question asked and answered so many times? I have observed that the answer to the question “did JESUS exist” is not one that enjoys consensus amongst atheists.
In my participation on various articles in News 24, I have come across the following responses to the question (paraphrased).
1. JESUS did not exist – HE is just another mythical character.
2. JESUS did exist but HE was not GOD, just a carpenter’s son.
Let’s look at the first atheistic position where the assertion is that JESUS is a mythical character. The first time this position was postulated was by Bruno Bauer, a German historian and philosopher. He argued that JESUS of Nazareth did not exist because the New Testament is not worthy of being accepted as historical, there were no non-Christian historian who mentioned JESUS in the 1st Century and finally he states that Christianity originated from works that was mythical in nature. This position is still held by a few and the leading champion is Richard Carrier.
Why am I writing this article? Well it is easy. I want to ask this question to all atheists and agnostics. In fact I ask it as a favour so that I understand what the real positions are and why they are so. Please consider this as a survey and your participation will be much appreciated.
“Does JESUS Exist?” If you answer yes, how do you know this? And if you answer no, please state how you came to this conclusion.
What I won’t do is respond to your comments here but take a collective of the common responses and write an article on my observation and canvassed scholarly responses to the question. I promise not to solicit only Christian Scholars on the matter.
So to all atheist and agnostic readers, please help me with this. I will really appreciate your help.
