This word can easily be associated with the ANC, don’t get me wrong grateful we are for the freedom that you gave us as black South Africans, but in the same breath we are very disappointed. For all the promises that you made and some were kept, a lot well they were not.

The ANC took power in 1994, I remember that day very well, people were dancing, singing, rejoicing oh it was indeed a happy day in South Africa, well not for many but in my township it was a happy day. But years gone by I cannot say the same today, it has been 18 years of democracy in our country, but each year it feels like democracy has become a myth. We have had the talks but we have not seen the actions, oh believe me a lot of promises have been made by our leaders but have they been kept? No they haven’t, it has become all talk.

We have seen how the ruling party have abuse power, how they have mislead people, how they have done so little for our country and have left a bitter after taste.  You will think that South Africa is doing well until you have the opportunity of seeing the suffering of our people, the cries of the homeless, the cries of the needy, the poor; yes this is what we call democracy in our life time.

A child begs for food, the number of families that go to bed without food on a daily basis and yet we say we are leaving in a democracy and we have a government that cares for its people.  You look at how young people struggle to make ends meet, begging to be given a chance to a freedom that we are told we have. Oh yes this is 18 years down the line, 18 years of freedom, 18 years of democracy. This is supposed to be our land, that is what our anthem says that this is our land, but I beg to differ this is the land of the people in power.

Here is what everything boils down to, our leaders are not servants, they do little or nothing in serving our communities and country. A leader is someone who looks after his people, who takes responsibility to serve, to set an example and to solve the problems of the people that he leads. Do our leaders do this? Sadly very little of them do and that is indeed disappointing.
