“As a citizen of this country, I've got to be honest to the people of South Africa”, this is one of Mr President Jacob Zuma’s quotes. Recent developments ranging from Guptage scandal and now recently Nkadla, signals that Mr President Jacob Zuma failed to live up to what he said, hence, the above opening quote.
In his political career, Mr Jacob Zuma has faced significant legal challenges. He was charged with rape, but was acquitted. He also fought a long legal battle over allegations of racketeering and corruption. The charges were eventually dropped due to political interference.
Mr Jacob Zuma is a very culture driven man, this can be witnessed by his polygamist behavior. He has a very big family, according to reports he is a proud father of about 20 children. The current no one South African citizen goes home to five wives and undisclosed number of grandchildren.
“The majority in this country have not seen anything wrong with Zuma. I go with the overwhelming feeling of this country. If the majority say, 'Zuma, do this,' I will do it.” This is famous quote by Mr Jacob Zuma. As things stand, it is quite clear that Mr Jacob Zuma is not willing to vacate office regardless of calls from overwhelming feeling by the majority.
Since Mr Jacob Zuma was unable to make a right decision according to what the overwhelming majority is saying, can he then considers that he is husband, father, and grandfather. Somewhere, somehow his family will be or are affected by this. His grandchildren and possibly great grandchildren will forever be reminded about his political journey.
Someone would think that as the head of the family, it is also his duty to protect his family, especially from media which constantly put his family under scrutiny. But it remains impossible to for Mr President Jacob Zuma to move his family away from the spotlight as he constantly have to answer to matters outside of his presidential duties.
I would think that, if Mr Jacob Zuma is unable to tender his resignation due to pressure from overwhelming majority, he would then resign in the interest of his family.
