…….before they treat kids! I am a qualified General Practitioner with thirteen years of working experience. I can honestly say that before I had my own two children, I was pretty clueless on the practicalities of raising and treating kids. Don’t get me wrong….I can calculate the most intricate of drug dosages and if your child is really ill, I can resuscitate with the best of them.
However, I had no real idea about sleep or feeding issues….how to get a baby into a good routine or just how hard and exhausting breastfeeding can be. What is mostly interesting though is how easily we as doctors prescribe medications that I now know no child will EVER take! One example is the ever so popular “rehydrate” type solutions if your child has gastro-enteritis. I mean really, are there kids out there that actually swallow the stuff? Mine flat out refuses!! Eventually, out of a fear of dehydration, I would give her OROS or Rooibos Tea. The only food she would eat was Simba chips - heaven forbid! However, if that’s all your child has been willing to eat for three days then you’re too happy about the little energy it might provide.
The other deceiving script are those magical inhalers that are meant to cure allergies and that ever so irritating post-nasal drip. Does your child allow you to anywhere near her nose with a nozzle? Mine doesn’t and eye-drops……even more impossible!!
These are just a few examples of where what we are taught in theory really does not work in reality. i seriously now, in retrospect, believe that all practitioners who treat kids should preferably have their own. It will give you a whole new perspective!
