Does placing an X on a ballot paper represent change?

12 February 2014, 09:01

With the general elections on the way, one is reminded of the first democratic election of 1994. Though some people may still refute that real change has not fully manifested itself or as desired and hoped by many since they cast their votes.

The demonstrations that are engulfing the country, starting from poor service delivery, educational and financial exclusion, sky-rocketing inequality and the likes, one is bound to question the value of placing an X on the ballot paper; the questions  most likely to be asked are:

1. Has voting lost its momentum to persuade voters?

2. Do ordinary citizens still see the value in placing an X?

3. After so many years of poor if not no service delivery at all do people still hope that placing an X can change the situation?

4. Do the ordinary citizens see the importance of voting or only the few ruling elites? If you are going to vote, what prompts you to do so?
