Before I begin let me first say I’ve only been an “Expat” for four months now and I miss home a little more every day. I now stay in the UAE and lets be honest. I'm only here for the money.
There are a lot of South Africans here!! People always told me there were a few but I never realized exactly how many!!! I've met a few very decent people here. And before anyone says anything about race let me set the record straight.... I’ve met white Saffas, Black Saffas, coloured Saffas and Indian Saffas, every kind of South African under the sun. And we all get along wonderfully! I’m guessing it’s the pull towards home that brings us together. Even myself...an English white guy, will speak in Afrikaans to and English black guy just so we can feel more South African. You’re sitting in a pub and from across the bar you hear “Ag nee man!! Bliksim!” You’re head turns and your heart races. You can’t help it. It’s just the way it is.
The point of my story is this.... I’ve noticed an immense underlying pride in South Africa that I never knew existed until moving here. When South Africans come together we bitch and moan and curse and swear about how bad it is back home. We cry about the crime, the unemployment, the cost of living, F-Ing E-Tolls, the ANC, the DA, these new clowns the EFF...the works. And all the other people(non-South Africans) in the bar get the sense that we hate our country. This is their first mistake. They try join in! I wish all of you could be a fly on the wall when the first brave Brit tries to tell a South African how bad his/her country is. The transformation is incredible! All of us will stop, turn around and give the death stare!!! South Africa is the BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!! We have the best landscape, the best weather, the best wine, the best meat, the best fruit, the best rugby team, the best beer and above all..... we know how to braai!
South African’s come together so quickly and with such gusto when a non-South African tries to degrade our beautiful country!!! Its a thing of beauty and makes me want to stand on the bar counter, put my fist to my chest and sing either “Uit die blou van onse hemel”,” Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika” or “Shosholoza” at the top of my lungs. I want to tell them the story of Jock of the bushveld, the unfathomable power of shaka zulu, the tenacity of Paul Kruger. I want to watch these ignorant people’s eyes light up at the tales of camp fires, lions, riding elephant, tracking game for days and on and on and on.... even though I grew up in centurion and only rode an elephant the first time a few weeks ago. Doesn’t matter! I'M AN AFRICAN DAMMIT! And this is how we roll!!!!
So now... to the point! I’ve noticed in my short time away from SA that colour, race, religion.... to South Africans... it doesn’t matter really. What matters is that you know what a bakkie is, where Table Mountain is and how beautiful the Garden Route is. We’re all “goosebump getting” proud of being South Africans! And we will defend it through thick and thin! It’s our country! And even though we’ve left.... our blood is still green and gold! So... no matter where you are in the world. Read this, share this and be proud to be an African. Yes we have problems but so does every where else.
