Dr Mamphela Ramphele for President
I was sitting at home listening to the TV with one ear. The next minute I heard the following:
"Violence is the language of the powerless"
I sat up and took notice. It was an interview with Dr Mamphela Ramphele on Carte Blanche. She spoke about the education system, the healthcare problems, the violence and the leadership of our country. She spoke about the fact that there is no accountability for the people providing the important services in our country like education and blatantly stated that the government is destroying the future of our country and asked for the fellow citizens to wake up.
She has a medical degree from the University of Natal, mother of Steve Biko's child, first black vise-counselor of the University of Cape Town and also the first woman and 4 years as the MD of the World Bank. She is now on the board of Goldfields and her first condition was that she needed transformation plans put in place to repair the damages their BEE deal has done.
Then the question was posed if she would not take up a role in politics and it hit me, as white African, why not her? She shrugged it off by saying she only plays a role as citizen but I believe she can carry this country out of the debts of its current crisis.
To be honest, I have never even considered voting for any other party than my own (please excuse my reluctance to mention names) but I was moved by the words, the outlook and the vision of Dr Mamphela Ramphele and if she put her name in the hat, I would vote for HER, not her party.
The sadness that hit me was the fact that she would probably never stand up to be counted and that is so sad. I implore anyone that knows Dr Mamphela Ramphele, or knows how to get in contact with Dr Mamphela Ramphele to give her this message:
“I believe in you”
