Dr Nelson Mandela has been to the Mountain Top

14 June 2013, 07:26

The recent developments of persistent hospital admission of former South African president Nelson Mandela has been met with a deep reflection by people all over the world of his life as a Freedom fighter. The magnitude of worries that has entangled the whole country is mainly resulting from people who haven’t been to the mountain top(Martin Luther King Jr).These people haven’t experienced the fruits of Democracy and liberation struggle in the new South Africa. When you try to find out who they are, you look at the previously marginalised people of South Africa, when you look at their economic freedom status , they are the poorest of the poor and the unemployed people. When every day goes by, the Doctors treating Mandela have the unfortunate pressure of doing anything that they can to save his life including a full lung transplant as some have been suggesting. It is what Mandela represent that keeps everyone imagining the present and the future .Dr Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for life imprisonment under the Apartheid regime South Africa in 1964 charged with treason because of what he believed in. The thought by any person that lives today about beliefs would end up in the consciousness of the mind that you just can’t imprison.

The manner in which Nelson Mandela served his sentence is beyond comparison. One would like to imagine that in the prison system today, life imprisonment is the harshest sentence that a prisoner can be handed .The circumstances that Mandela was released under always had age against him as a denominator meaning that whatever he does, age would divide it. Like what Mandela has always been good at, he proved everyone wrong. The rapid momentum of conviction of ordinary South Africans to liberate themselves through service delivery and freedom of choice of their own leaders is what preoccupied South Africans during the time when Mandela was President of the Country.

When you look at the hop and dreams of a young black child all over the world, Mandela’s values are part of it one way or the other. The hope of equality and freedom for all are what everybody wants. The hope of economic freedom for ordinary people is what everybody dreamt of. The hope of black and white people living side by side in the new South Africa is what everybody wants. The hope of readjusting the inequalities of the past through democratic means is what everybody wants. The hope of respecting the rights of Women and children is what everybody wants. The hopes of a healthy prosperous nation free of diseases. Many hope but at the moment one wonders if those dreams are fading.

The medical interventions on Nelson Mandela started much earlier even when no one cared to know about it. It was devastating then when in 1988 Nelson Mandela was diagnosed with active Tuberculosis and he was brave enough to complete treatment. The recent medical challenges leave those who know him to realise that he is a fighter and just never let go. The aging body of the adult statesman has more problems than that which has surfaced as the reason for his latest hospital admission. The Mediclinic Heart hospital in Pretoria South Africa in which Mandela has been admitted to recently has been struggling to keep away the pressures of public interest on one of its famous clients. The stealing steps of age have brought a lot to deal with for Nelson Mandela and those who cares about him. The Nelson Mandela we all know has been to the mountain top and he doesn’t mind.
