Have you ever seen a young child about 3 years old who had been driven to a state close to partial insanity due to being teased endlessly and abused by the nursery personnel.
This child was exposed to the nursery personnel for more than nine hours a day while the parents were away earning a living. She was exposed to being shouted at and beaten with a belt and other easily available objects. Being rather withdrawn she refused to eat due to the food being practically forced down her throat. Food had become another object of distrust to her. An object of pain.
One day she was fetched at the nursery and her physical and mental state was unbelievable and she only wanted her father present. Her parents were her only anchor in her miserable life. In another instance, when she was to be collected by her parents she went missing. After hours of searching the neighbourhood and unsuccessfully, the police were contacted. The police search proved unsuccessful and they left. The search resumed without the police. Sometime later a bundle was noticed against a fence and close to the road. She was happily looking up at the stars and drinking from her baby bottle.
Many times when she was prepared by the nursery staff to return home she was seldom cleaned or bathed.
When she reached school-going age she was turned down due to her low IQ. Later she was placed in an institution but was returned to her home again because she could not handle the school work or the teasing she received from other children. She remained at home for some time then sent to another school which caters for her type of problem.
In this case she was properly integrated with the other children who were more caring towards her. She received a “job” and payment. Her job was ironing the clothing of the other children and she managed quite well.
One day she was sent home due to her having lost out on many leave periods. I found her writing down a long list of double numbers. On set was for the street number and the other was a list of telephone numbers. She had learnt to associate the telephone numbers with the street numbers and could recite them with 100% accuracy.
I asked her to recite the telephone number, the street number and the occupants name for the seventh house down the road. She done it with ease.
