I read the following that was posted to me from the African Centre of Bio Diversity with great concern:
"It emerged that Africabio-the lobby group for Monsanto et al, is challenging the wording of the mandate for the labeling laws. This is Africabio's position: "Kindly note that the ingredients have not been genetically modified, it is the crops (maize, soybean and cotton) that have been genetically modified or improved for insect resistance and for weed control in the field. Thus the ingredients or components are derived from genetically modified crops. We thus call for this section of the law to be re-written or scrapped, as we found ourselves with an incorrectly written act and hence we still have very ambiguous amendment labelling regulations. Thus with the wrong terminology in the Act, it has thus become difficult to come up with realistic GM labelling regulations." ""
South Africans are by and large unaware of the dangers of genetically modified foods.
1. There is the patenting laws, which in effect will put all seeds, plants and eventually every animal, patenting all food sources into the hands and in the control of a small group of corporations. The mealie seeds that farmers propagate from their own crops, the tomato plants that each and every person today cultivates from their own tomatoes, the potatoes that we can all let go to seed in order to create a new crop for the next season, will, if these people are allowed to continue, become a criminal offence, because these seeds and plants will be owned by them. I do believe that this is a criminal offence against humanity and it is corporate fascism run riot!
2. The chemicals used on genetically modified maize, soya and cotton are highly poisonous and are derived from the same poisons used in agent orange, a chemical that was responsible for over 4 million deaths during the Vietnam War and where today, the Vietnamese population still continue to suffer the effects.
3. Tests done by French scientists have proved that these genetically modified foods create cancerous tumours in mice and also infertility by the third generation.
4. All food products containing ingredients derived from genetically modified maize and soya are therefore highly toxic and the onus is on the food producers such as Nestle, Kellogs, Bokomo and others to fully inform consumers that their products contain such ingredients. Africabio's position on this is therefore questionable. IF their products are made from genetically modified material or contain any ingredients, such as this maize and soya, then their products ARE genetically modified.
The South African public demands that all food sold on our shelves be labelled and clearly identified as having any genetically modified indigents. To do otherwise is deceptive.
