Edgars security/staff forces customer to strip

11 January 2014, 23:27

I am so utterly disgusted with Edgars (Edcon). On 12th December 2013, my cousin went to Edgars, Maynard Mall, Wynberg looking to purchase a cellphone, which she did by providing all the necessary documentation. Upon leaving the store, the metal detector sounded and security checked her bags etc. and when the detector still went off without her bags with her, she was told that she must be searched, all this at the store exit in front of other customers. She refused and insisted on seeing the store manager, who informed her that they do not have cameras and therefore have to search her. My cousin then insisted on a refund for her purchase and was ESCORTED by security to the counter to do the refund who also told her that she may not leave the store until being searched. My cousin was then taken to a room at the back of the store where she was forced to UNDRESS in front of security and staff, PHYSICALLY SEARCHED on her body underwear and ALL. As a young woman, a mother and a wife, how humiliating, violating and degrading it all was for her. She later managed to contact some senior management of Edgars who apologized. After my cousin tried to take the matter further, all she has been offered by Edgars this week is R5000 compensation saying that they have "found no evidence of these allegations". Needless to say after their violation of my cousin, I will never support an Edgars store again. Just think if they did this to one of your daughters, or your wife, how would you feel about it? Absolutely disgusted.
