There are not a lot of experiences as powerful and invigorating than getting that final pass on your matric results. The smell of success lingers for long after the results have been made known.
Jackson Mthembu said in a statement: “These results reflect an increase not only in the number of schools passing but also in the quality of passes,". This is truly good news for South Africa and learners that are still battling academics in school.
While school is an important factor in our society I believe that education is even more crucial. In the words of Madiba: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
It seems that a lot of people in our community and probably the world still think that school or other teaching institutions are responsible for our education. Education is not the institutions or the paper credentials that we possess. Education is the experiences, knowledge, lessons and wisdom that we possess. Everybody is educated in that sense. No-one is an empty vessel.
I hated school. School for me was a hell-hole of activity.
My reasons for hating school:
§ Not being able to choose subjects that I believe would benefit me
§ Being forced to learn things I have no interest in
§ Being forced to apply what I have learnt in a way that I didn’t find helpful
§ Being forced to write tests that apparently measure intellectuality
Some of us think and believe that we can only get an education from formal institutions. That is a self-limiting believe. Start taking responsibility for your education. Become a student of life. Always push yourself to grow and learn more.
How can we nurture an attitude of learning? The following might help:
§ Find problems that interest you.
§ Let your mind be curious about things you don’t understand.
§ Make sure you know where to find information. Tools and resources.
§ Question other minds.
§ Find ways to apply what you have learned.
Now is the time for anyone to get an education. You do not need formal institutions to obtain an education. All you need is the willingness to learn and an attitude of responsibility.
