It is almost here! I don't know about everyone else, but I always get a rush of excitement when we start coming closer to election time…
All the candidates are decidedly nervous about gaining as much support as possible, while at the same time discrediting their political opponents and promoting their own political promises and ideas. It is at about this time that we start to see in the media all these wonderful stories about all the politicians and political parties doing these lovely charitable public and community service "projects".
I am glad to say that I have not been disappointed this year. That story about the members of the ANCYL helping out at an old-age home really got me thinking. In all seriousness, that was a very nice and generous thing to, lets be honest here. But, it also begs the question: "Will they do it again, and if so, on a regular basis?" We generally only see these kinds of good deeds before and during election mania. Wouldn't it be nice to see all the political parties take on certain projects at election time, and at the same time pledge to continue those same projects until the next election, where they can then be assigned another?
The ANCYL could perhaps continue to run projects aimed at helping and caring for the countries' elderly. Let the ruling ANC focus on developing poverty-stricken areas. Hellen Zille has certainly proved herself to be very capable, so why doesn't the DA focus on combating the drug problem? There are hundreds of things to choose from. Wouldn't it be nice to occasionally see and hear about pleasant things like this, in between the murder, rape, and drugs?
I hope that we will be in for many more nice stories in this regard. I honestly cannot wait to see what happens next, especially with their pay increase due for approval…
