Many a night I have fallen asleep with the words I have read on here haunting my dreams. Many a morning I have face palmed at the stupid things I hear normally completely rational people utter when they think they are with friends. Those deep and dark secrets you cant let your boss know because your boss is black. Those dark things you cannot utter because your audience is white. I for one am sick of this utter bullshit coming from both sides of the fence.
To black people.Yes, I get it, Apartheid was bad. It was unebelievably bad. It was so bad this country nearly erupted in civil war because of it. It was so incredibly bad that even till today the scars it cut are still evident. I get this, really I get that it was bad and its lingering effects are still terrible. I get that many of you earn less in a month than I do in a week. It sucks, I know. Its not fair. I agree.
To white people. Yes I get it. The views of Apartheid were the views many of you were raised on. I understand that the government isnt performing. I get it, I really do. I get that we bear the brunt of the blame for Apartheid, even those who were borne after. I get that fairness is lacking in quotas for jobs that need to be filled. I get this, it sucks so much. I get it. Its not fair. The economy is suffering, theres a new strike every week. I see all the problems that you do.
But at what point did we all get together and decided the best way forward was all this racist bull? We cannot change what has happened in the past...and to be honest we would deprive ourselves of a great deal if we did. This nation has SURVIVED an oppresive regime and brought about change without a war. That is something that no other nation can boast. The USA cant say this. Neither can Russia, UK, France or any other nation. For this I am more proud to be a South African than anything else. We did it...all South Africans. The freedom fighters did it, both white and black. The White man on the street did it by voting the old regime out. The black man on the street did it by making it so obvious that what was being done was utterly WRONG. It was South Africa's greatest achievement. But almost 20 years down the line and what do we have? Racism alive and kicking, hatred spawning more hatred. ENOUGH ALREADY
So who is to blame for this? We all love the blame game and in a previous article I did exactly that. Is it the Government's fault for not trying to be cohesive in trying to breed a new culture of nation building? Definitely. Is it the fault of the AWB spawn offs for breeding more hatred through stupid racial teachings? Of course. Is it the fault of the black racist movements of the likes of Julius Malema? You bet. Is it the fault of the economy not being large enough to support everyone? Yebo yes. Is it crime that deprives us all of our dignity? I know it is. But there is someone that is even more to blame than any of these. Its you. Its me. Its our ENTIRE NATION. From the newly born child to the old granny in her little apartment spending the rest of her life, forgotten by her family in her old age. It is the faults of the striking workers and their bosses. The fatcat politicians and their secretaries. It is the fault of everyone. We are all to blame not because we dont get it, but because we are unable or unwilling to say " ENOUGH ALREADY" and move on with building a better society for our children. We have to realise and accept that for now we are screwed. There is no quick fix for the issues within our country...but just maybe if we WORK TOGETHER, we can have those issues fixed by the time our kids have their own kids and let them worry about completely new issues instead of our crappy legacy of hatred.
I know my words are in vain. Those who agree are too few, those who cannot accept this fate will keep screaming their lungs out blaming someone else for their issues...but if instead of thise hatred we had banded together those 20 years ago, all races...we might just have been able to start picking the fruits of our labours now. But alas, I will have to go back and cry for what is to become of my beloved country. All I have now is hope that just maybe one day we can all say enough already and do what is needed.
