Every South African must possess a World Call card

10 June 2014, 09:49
This might make me look quite outdated but I think every single South African must possess a World Call Card.

A World Call Card is one little voucher you may purchase at any of South Africa's retail stores and any Telkom-licensed store nationwide, and this voucher will allow you to make a call on any of those green Telkom telephones in the country without needing to carry coins or an actual card.

The voucher itself is in the form of digits that you enter on the phone and use that to speak to anyone in the whole world. The magic behind a World Call card is apparent in its name: it can be used in any street telephone in the more that 30 countries in the world. I recently found myself in the streets of London, and having been told that minute of talk time to my family at home would cost me north of R10 of the airtime I had left with from South Africa.

I tried that, and a second problem arose: what I said at this very moment would be heard around 5 seconds later by the other party. On top of that, the call quality didn't sound great, and that is when I decided to use my World Call voucher. It worked wonders. Quick responses, great call quality, and even as cheap as a land-line call inside South Africa. We talked for minutes on end. And that is when I started cherishing the technology of street phones...in the 21st century. The communication sounds great, but there are more benefits than that to the average South African. Often we find ourselves stranded with our phone batteries dead, unable to seek help from places we know help may exist. We may also find ourselves mugged of every little possession we have on that night out with friends. The way it is very easy to memorize your World Call card number, makes it so easy for you to contact anyone for assistance, on any nearby phone. This proves that though such an item as a WorldCall card may not always be a necessity, it could save your life, and your money at some point when these need saving. Thank you Telkom.
