Evolution of rugby

25 October 2012, 11:44

This article has nothing to do with evolution but it is used as a heading because much lower down in this article EVOLUTION  will surface even if it is by brute force.

This article is really about the favourite sports of NEWS24 users. Rugby.

According to stats all know everything about rugby and the rest know zilch-all. When I tally up the comments after a Curry cup match on a Friday/Saturday night I find 50% have a common opinion and the other 50% have a diametrically different opinion and these two forces slug it out during the week and never arrive at a synthesis.

What is hugely funny is the lists. Seems each fan draws up a list indicating his preferences and what I love so much is that this is done after the game is played. Fat lot of good that is. Were one to draw up a list with all players available getting a true 15 combination that is the best team is almost impossible , what with the players who sit on the reserve benches. They may as well have stayed at home.

If evolution was a viable force then it could be geared up to select the fittest team and we will ask Richard What-is-his-name to help out .with the details.

When I was at school we worked out the ideal method of getting the best players into the team and onto the field.. We had 2 teams: The first team and the second team. And only 16 players.  Do not ask a silly question but by our deep insight we used the player no 16 to fetch the ball when kicked too far and other odd jobs like peeling the oranges. When the first team had to play a game the 15 players went onto the field. There was seldom a case where a player was injured and had to leave the field because it was usually the opponents who suffered pain because we inflicted it. Those days Daddy never stood on the side line to give junior a boost but spent his time in the bar to boost himself.  When it was time for the second team to play their game it was rather simple. The 15 players stayed on the field and no16 brought the water and  towels.

One Saturday while playing Otjivasondo high school we lost badly but to make up the ego’s we found cause to look for a fight and we won the fight hands down and were acclaimed the best team in the region.      There was just one short coming to our rugby utopia and that was to get to the neighbouring town to play the game. It was rather difficult to get 16 players into a ford bakkie so someone’s  Dad had the chore of conveyor.

The local policeman stood in to get 10 players to the field 90miles awayUsakos. We were placed under the Tourneau cover  for protection against the weather at 0500 AM.  If we were not freezing we sang the Suid Wes lied. On arrival on site we received a mug of coffee and would have fixed the game for that cuppa. Usakos rugby field had thorns on it and it took as long as the game to sort out where not to play for the thorns. We played barefoot due to the international economic slump which hit the shoe shops hard. We generally had a good record on the field. We never won a game but won all the fights.  Then we had this young ouk called Bryce: Oh to hell with him
