My typical weekday morning in the Eastern Cape involves a simple 5 minute drive to work but listening to Gareth Cliff’s snotty rants is excruciating.
Yes. I know. Switch the radio off. Change the station. Perhaps, I should burn a CD with good music but how much useless drivel do I have to ignore before I get to hear the 7am news. I really do not care if Gareth finds the Paralympics “awkward to watch”. I do not wish to hear his acorn brain opinions on the state of our nation. All I want is some decent humor, some good music and some serious news. It is Gareth Cliff or the Golden Oldies on Algoa FM – my morning drive nightmare.
5 FM is not all bad. As a matter of fact, the Fresh drive in the afternoon is fantastic. DJ Fresh treats those inside and outside his studio with a genuine respect. He will never divulge useless opinions on topics he does not understand and he is willing to entertain the views of all South Africans. Unlike our “candid” Cliff who will pepper an alternative point of view with a snide remark or his own distasteful afterthought.
The tension in Cliffy’s studio is cringe worthy as we all hold thumbs a naïve caller does not get ridiculed and dismissed. Mind you, I feel sorry for his studio colleagues. You can sense they do not share his sentiments and are quite reluctant to join Cliff’s overly opinionated rants.
The atmosphere during the Fresh drive is completely different. The team will find humor in the most sensitive of topics. I always leave my vehicle smiling. Sometimes, I will stay put for a few moments just to hear the end of some or other hearty discussion.
Come to think of it. There is nothing fresh about the morning drive. It is about time they give that bigheaded Cliff the boot.
