Fish Hoek, Hidden Jem or Dodgy Dive?

01 April 2013, 12:08

Has Fish Hoek been given a bad wrap? The Shark attacks, the eColi scare on the beach and the stalking granny case, all tainting the already dodgy image of this little seaside town.

Fish Hoek is a small town on the cape peninsula, between it’s more famous neighbors Kalk Bay and Simons town. It has for many years been a ‘Dry’ town with no off license liquor stores, a plus in my view, although I am partial to a good cabernet.

We moved here from Johannesburg in 2002, to a house on the mountainside, with a north facing sea view for a fraction of the price of equivalent properties on the peninsula. There is a strange attitude towards this town, which we could not and still don’t understand. Where in South Africa do you get panoramic north facing sea views?

It has all the things you would want from a seaside town, whales in the bay at certain times of the year, great swimming in warm water that is not too rough, shopping mall not too far away (but far enough) etc.

Just last week I took my dog for a walk on the ‘Dog’ side of the beach (yes, with my poo bags) I was the only person on the beach for at least a half hour!  Where in the world can you do that?

As many may have noticed from my other articles, I am not a big fan of superstition, and so for me the only drawback is the amazingly high number of places of worship, as many as 50! It’s big business here!
