Food security?

06 March 2013, 12:00

“Agriculture Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson said her department would ensure that it could produce enough food to curb household food insecurity across the country.”  This uninformed, incompetent, fool must rather be very quiet. It is better to be quiet and let the people think you are and idiot, than to open your mouth and confirm everyone’s suspicions!

How can you have food security when the majority of your population cannot afford basic food stuff?  In fact, according to a recent University of the Witwatersrand study, 12 million people in South Africa go to bed hungry every day!

How will you ever have food security when the farmers inset costs are simply raised to the level where there are absolutely no profits left? Where was this ministers inset during the recent NERSA hearings? Where are the deputations to the department of Energy Affairs regarding fuel costs? What was this ministers ridiculous statements during the recent agricultural labour unrest? Who can forget her threatening attitude against farmers wishing to mechanise to avoid further labour expense, unrest and damage to person and property?

How will you ever have food security when opportunistic land claimants hold commercial agricultural activity hostage with their non-sensible “land claims”? Even when these claims eventually prove to be bogus, these processes can take years, cost lots of money, and seizes all farming activity and infrastructure development!

How can you have food security when fertile productive land is handed over to local farmers, without the skills, knowledge, education, implements, infrastructure or running capital to produce anything? These once very productive farms just become barren eroded desserts!

How can you have food security when senior politicians in the ruling party constantly threat land expropriation without any compensation? While populist statements like these might go down well with some illiterate voters, it sends major investors running away to more secure investments with responsible governments elsewhere!

How can you have food security when international agricultural products are dumped in our markets, when those products were produced under enormous government subsidies, and with that subsidies priced way below anything that can be produced locally? Is this idiot going to create food security with imported European vegetables, South American fruit and Australian meat, once she has driven every last commercial farmer off the land?

How can you have food security when innocent farmers and their families are brutally murdered on a daily basis while the government sits on their hands doing nothing?

"Once they are all dead Tina, who is going to produce the food! The blood of every dead farmer, every dead wife, and every dead child are on your hands, because in your complete incompetence and blind following of your political party policies, you have allowed this situation to get this far out of control.”

Where are the police task forces deployed to protect these people? Where is the proactive involvement from the government to secure these innocent victims? Why did your government disband the commando system, and refuse farmers to reintroduce it under the military command for their own survival? Why hasn’t the military being deployed in real flashpoint where it is nowadays completely impossible to live and work, like Muldersdrift just outside Johannesburg?

“Wait till the hungry masses turn on you Tina? That day cannot be too far away in the future!”
