Forgive and forget.

16 August 2013, 12:27
We must be the most forgiving nation on earth. This article is actually inspired by today's poll about how much money traffic cops should be carrying with them to avoid corruption or mis-appropriation of funds. Why are they carrying cash at all? Well we don't have the systems in place to collect the fines electronically would be my answer. More importantly though, why don't we have those systems in place? We just forgive and forget that the department responsible for the systems have probably been given the budget for it but have never bothered to institute it. It was reported recently that most of the municipalities have incorrect or unaudited financials with blatant unauthorised spending. The worrying aspects about the budgets is that some of them are not spent at all. WHY NOT? How do they defend this. Sorry man, I just forgot to fix the potholes or sorry man, I just forgot to feed the children at the rural schools or sorry man, I forgot to build schools for those children.  If you don't spend this year, you won't get more next year. All we do is, with regards to these matters is, discuss it briefly around the "water cooler", as such, and then forgive and forget. At what stage do we actually do something about it. Well I don't see it happening soon because we have truly embraced the laager mentality. If I am ok, then everything else can go to hell. The next time someone mentions the thing that makes them angry we should say to them, "Well, what are you going to do about it?" Lets see what can be done with regards to a lot of topics instead of just forgiving and forgeting.
