We’ve all attended baby showers. They’re usually all the same – silly hats, Woolies cupcakes, predictable shades of pink or blue. Mom-to-be is wearing a nappy hat, looking kind of tired and trying her best to smile through the umpteenth piece of bizarre baby advice. At the end of it, the guests sigh happy smiles - all secretly relieved that they’re not the one about to blessed with the precious little screamer.
This weekend, I attended a different kind of baby shower. The cupcakes were still there, of course, but upstaged by two rather unexpected outfits:
1. The mom-to-be in full make-up and a mini-skirt – looking damn good for someone about to pop.
2. A guest wearing a shirt with the words “Living
the dream plan B” shamelessly emblazoned across her chest.
Now, it’s no secret that this little baby was not exactly planned. Without going into too much detail, let’s just say that the relationship between her parents is less than ideal. We’re not talking picket fences and apple pies here – we’re talking what Facebook calls “complicated”.
Safe to say, their current situation was probably never part of the Dream they had growing up. They are – as the T-shirt stated – living a Plan B life.
Now, before you think Miss T-Shirt is a right bitch for wearing such a thing, I honestly don’t think it was intentional. Still – it made me think. In one way or another, every one of is living Plan B.
Maybe you wanted to save the world but ended up in sales. Maybe you wanted devotion and landed with divorce. We all have our story.
I don’t know the Mom-to-be well enough to know what her story is. All I know is that she’s always been someone very polished and pretty. Someone who takes great pride in looking after her appearance, something most pregnant women don’t seem to give a damn about – give me that doughnut! I’m eating for two! Not her – at 8 months pregnant, she’s looking dolled up as ever.
Asked about her expectations of the birth, she says that she does not plan on grabbing her birth-bag and rushing to hospital – she plans on properly applying her mascara first.
I realised then – in some small way, she’s keeping her dream, her soul, herself alive. Even while living Plan B.
