In 1994, I remember my grandparents taking me to an ANC rally. At that time, our country was celebrating the release of Nelson Mandela.
I was only 4 years old, but I remember feeling some sort of elation - an elevation of happiness. Now at age 24, I distinctly know what that feeling was.
I was unable to understand it at the time, but Nelson Mandela had given me a future in which, I as a young South African, could prosper and grow to my full potential.
Our forefathers and mothers fought in the struggle against racial discrimination, but more importantly, to ensure that the generation after could live freely, peacefully and in unity.
I will forever be grateful to you Madiba. Your selflessness, humility and love are a lesson that will be taught for many years and it is our duty, as South Africans, to spread these teachings.
Go well and so safely. You carry the love of a nation in your heart.
