People foolishly believe everything they are told, whether it be on TV or simply at mass on a Sunday. But doesn't it seem a bit idiotic that they swallow such garbage whole? The fact of the matter is that it isn’t true. There is no God and followers of God are simply people who have nothing better to do with their lives and perhaps need some psychiatric help.
I once asked my mom if she believed in God and her response was that of course she did because everyone has to believe in some kind of greater power. I didn't really buy it. But now that I think about it maybe she was right, maybe she wasn't so far off after all. Perhaps there is a greater force out there, I'm not necessarily moved by the thought of it being some presence or spirit that simultaneously protects everyone, except for the starving children, the rape victims and the all the people that may perhaps believe in other gods. (how kind don’t you think?) , but there is something. The forces mentioned in physics for example, or maybe we should thank the mitochondria in our cells for our existence, for without them we couldn't live, without a ghost who claims to love us, we can.
Recently I was in a heated discussion about this very topic with my Christ loving friend and quite a few different reasons came up as to why God does or does not exist. I couldn't help but notice how her main defense was “God loves you”, oh yeah, that’s so convincing.
But the questions do arise and I'm afraid their answers tend to lean in favour of God being a fictional story with so many flaws and contradictions as to what is and is not acceptable.
You want proof? Well here’s the proof I can think of off the top of my head.
The universe is constantly expanding. This favours the big bang theory where really earth and life was created when a huge explosion occurred in space and the particles and elements started reacting in such a way that our existence occurred. Naturally this would have taken millions of years to accomplish whereas Christians believe that all this beauty in the world was created within 7 days. Sorry no, 6 days… I forgot that God got lazy on the seventh day and forgot to perfect his oh so loved creations. Maybe this is why we have crime and deformed babies? Let me guess? You still don’t believe it? I mean how could I ever know that the universe (which is truly enormous) is expanding when I'm just a lowly human? Well go ahead and Google the Doppler effect in light waves. I'm sure something will come up about the red shift theory, and there you will have your precious reasoning.
I was very amused by my friends reaction (for she also took science and could therefore not deny my logic) when I brought up all this proven information that supports the big bang theory and shuns the idea of God creating the world in 6 days. She claimed that their time back then worked differently, that their one day may have been the equivalent of a million years. In which case I find the next flaw.
According to biblical references people back then lived for hundreds of years. Okay fine, I’ll give that to her. Maybe to them one year was equivalent to a week instead of 52 of them… but then…if one day was equivalent to millions of years of time as it is now, then they truly did have unrealistically long lifespans!
And here it comes… if they lived that long then, without anyone to care for them when they caught a cold or broke a leg, then why, with all our improved technology and medicine can we not live for hundreds of years where one day is the equivalent to yet another million or so years. Wow. If only right?… but here we are with a lifespan that hardly covers a hundred years compiled of 52 weeks per year made up of normal 24 hour days.
And another interesting thought. If God created the sun and the earth plus everything on it in 6 days then where did the other planets come from? And if he truly did create them then what was their true purpose? Just to look pretty? And when in his busy schedule of creating the world did he get time to make every one of them, as is it took seven days to create earth alone. Ahhh that’s it, maybe he needed a hobby. He’s had 10 thousand years of boredom to sit around making planets right?
Well that explains why he wasn't around when his beloved followers were subjected to pain and violence… he was too busy on another planet going “and there was light”
