GOD IS CALLING YOU
Once there is love for God in one’s heart that is enough evidence that God loves such a person. For you cannot love God first. He loves you first, and then you love him in return.
There are people who once loved God very much, but now their love for God has grown cold. God’s love for us never changes, but ours for him often sinks to lowest levels. Others have become so cold towards Gods that it is even difficult to be sure they ever loved God at all. Such people are backsliders, and that is a dangerous condition to find yourself in. But if there is indeed a spiritual life in you, you will wish to return to your former condition. You have gone astray like a lost sheep – but you have not forgotten your Father’s commandments. The cause which started your love for God is the same which must restore it. You went to Christ as a sinner at first, and your first act was to believe the love of God for you. There was nothing in you that showed that you loved God. As a backslider, go to God the same way –through Christ as a sinner. Approach the LORD thinking of his unchanging grace and you will feel God’s love returning to your soul. He is willing to receive you into the bosom of his love. You, as a backslider, need to believe more in the love of God than before. You, who after knowing so much, have sinned against light and knowledge – after having experienced so much, you have lied to your initial confession. The LORD says, “Return you backslider and I will heal your backslidings. I will not cause my anger to fall on you, because I am merciful and I will not be angry forever.”
Backslider, don’t try to clean yourself. You have seen how impossible that is. Come just as you are, bad as you are, hardened, cold and dead as you feel yourself to be – come to the LORD still and believe in the boundless love of God in Christ Jesus. The LORD loves his prodigal children. He loves the sheep that has gone astray and he will devise means to bring it back home again. Backslider God has not stopped loving you. God still loves you. If you choose not to come back, though the LORD is calling you – you will perish forever, but God would still love you.
Imagine you have a son who has disobeyed you, has gone from you and is living like a drunkard and in all manner of lust. In your anger you have made it crystal clear to him that you have removed his name from the family list and will no longer regard him as your son anymore. Do you think that son will be eager to return home in love? I don’t think so. That will never happen.
But suppose the same disobedient son, you still assure him that you love him, that there is still a place for him at your table, and a bed in your house for him – and better still, a warm place in your heart for him. Suppose he sees your tears and hears your prayers for him. Will this not draw him back home? Yes indeed he will surely return with more love than before, if he was truly your son.
The LORD has not given your place to another. He still loves you. Come to him and he will gladly receive you with warm hands. If you are truly his child, you will come back to your loving Savior. Jesus loves you. God loves you. Come back home.
