I recently followed a debate on the Atheist Experience blog (http://freethoughtblogs.com/axp/) in which a pastor and an atheist debated the existence or not of god. As I read more I became more and more bored with the whole thing. It became incredibly convoluted and delved into the depths of what logic is!
Well, I think we make to much of having a rational debate with the religious. I will ask a very simple question that illustrates why I began my path to intellectual freedom and eventually freed myself of the last burden to truly free thought.... religion.
How can anybody justify that your eternal soul's redemption depends entirely on where you happened to be born? If you were born in Saudi Arabia and I was born in Tel Aviv, one of us is screwed. If I was born in Salt Lake City and you were born in Mumbai once again one of us is screwed. Because no matter how I live my life in the place I arrived on Earth, somebody in another part of Earth will know I am damned!!
Forget all the fancy arguments and ponder only this, how trite is your god when he allows good people to suffer for eternity! Death is inevitable and awaits us all. Then we go to sleep! Forever!
Stop deluding yourself and missing out on the opportunity to truly experience the wonder that is life. Embrace it, enjoy it and contribute to the betterment of it for not only yourself but your fellow man and all our future generations. Heaven (or whatever you call it) is a false hope for the ego. And hell is the sick, twisted way of saying I know better than you.
Believe what you want, take comfort where you can, but please please stop this insidious child abuse called religion and let our children, once they have reached the age of consent, make up their own minds! But the religious will never allow this because they know that would be the end of religion. Teach children how to think, not what to think.
