God or Science? Why not both?

24 April 2013, 13:00

Overview

Quite often while perusing the News24 articles i'll see a reply or  a response to why God is or is not real, how religion is either saving or destroying the world or how the bible is either the 100% Gospel truth and cannot be refuted or is just a book used to repress people through promise of punishment if the church was not obeyed.

I consider myself a religious person with a scientific/analytical brain. While i have faith, my analytical nature  is constantly questioning that faith. This is something that most atheists would call "stupid", "moronic" or "F-ing retarded". And they're probably right, but isnt that the nature of the human race? Constantly questioning the nature of reality, wondering if there is anything bigger out there etc. Any Christian, no matter how strong cannot say that they have no doubts, they're only lying to themselves, as we were given free will for a reason. Whether it was given to us by God or just an evolutionary process that resulted in a self-aware species capable of meaningful thought and improvement, we'll never know until we die.

Harmless faith

Not to bash atheists here, but IF a person's belief has no effect on the lives of anyone else, let them be. The crazy religious nut-jobs like the templar crusaders who killed anyone who wasn't Christian however, should be enlightened by the atheists purely because of their ability to grasp scientific concepts and perform tons of research.

Take one of your average evangelists, reaping millions of Rands/Dollars from the gullability of "stupid" Christians, that person deserves to be torn apart, but the average believer, who's faith gives him/her hope because life has dealt them a blow, or just gives them peace during the death of a loved one, leave them be.

The Bible

One of the things atheists love to destroy with science is the bible, and at the risk of being crucified by fellow Christians, to a certain extent they're right...I REPEAT, THEY ARE RIGHT TO A CERTAIN EXTENT. If we took the bible seriously, people who are truly damaged, schizophrenics or those with a multiple personality disorder may interpret voices in their head to be the voice of God, and through reading simple stories like Abraham who was about to sacrifice his son, might decide to act on those voices based on misplaced faith. Personally i dont see the bible as something to be taken literally (shunning the lepers and "whores"), but rather as non-literal guidelines to life, i.e. the 10 commandments, some of them are what society's most basic rules are based on (dont kill, dont steal etc)

Homosexuality and Acceptance

"God hates gays", "God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"...Those are phrases i've always hated. I'm a straight, Religious ,guy yet i find it hard to hate the homosexuals. If someone finds happiness in the love of someone from the same sex, then why shouldn't they be allowed to be happy? The only reason homosexuality is taboo is because of the church's views on it. Love thy neighbour is supposedly the Golden Rule. Regardless of their preferences, until i can find a reason not to, i will love them as a neighbour

Final Thoughts

In my opinion, Faith is not unquestioning obedience to a higher power, rather the willingness to accept the possibility of some divine intervention in science until otherwise proven wrong, as long as it does not cause harm.

I am more than open to criticism without damming you to hell :P so please post your comments or thoughts. The more light you can shed on the topic of religion, the better.
