An epiphany to the highest degree, one I want to get out of my head and onto paper. Religious folk, lend me your eyes and ears for I have found why and what it is that is dividing us. In truth I have no interest in disproving anything or proving anything – to me it is irrelevant, all I want to accomplish is to gain unity between people. This can only happen once we understand where each of us stands.
As a non-believer, I come here to improve my knowledge base off of the teachings of others. What seems relevant or of importance I will investigate, take at face value and then continue to further the idea by thinking about it myself. I come here to debate those like minded folk who think along the lines I do, yet might share a different viewpoint, idea or maybe even further some of my own thoughts. This is what I live for – the pursuit of knowledge. Not happiness, contentment or any one of the other manmade ideas behind what ‘meaning’ or ‘purpose’ there is to life, but my very own ideal of what I wish to accomplish. It is almost a serendipitous experience to shadow mankind’s ever-growing knowledge base, for as I go on through my daily life I come upon marvellous and exciting concepts all on mere chance. In essence my lust for knowledge brings about a whole new perspective on mundane, exciting and everyday experiences.
Now I ask, why is it that believers choose to come here? This forum for ‘debate’, why do you spend so much time and effort on a platform which will neither increase your knowledge base concerning belief nor add to an already complete book of ‘truths’. Maybe it is to throw around ideas, different meanings, or interpretations of the various Bible’s available, but then my question becomes, why even bother with the articles that deal with contradictions to your faith? An answer I’ve received is, “to keep balance” – however, what balance? How can a balance be kept if the religious already have their balance? You have your answers, you have your book and you have your God, so why even debate it? If the Bible’s words are absolute truth, then surely you are seeking answers in all the wrong places turning to an open forum where you are well aware of the fact that what you find there will not be along the lines that you are going to be happy with. It is like taking an SPCA activist to an organised dogfight. When it comes down to it my friends, you have your book with all your answers and now you are angry with those who disagree and have decided to voice it. Because they are different and do not share your sentiments they are now the ‘enemy’ – exactly why I find religion to divide us. Your insults, mud-slinging and witch hunting, what is it all for? Of course the non-believers here are not immune to this, but as I said before we are here to learn. Having people tell us we are stupid and continuously dangling Bible terminology around like it’s imperative to us will only garner retaliation. For the truth is we do not need it. We have taken our time to come to the point we are. If it is a linear model of progression I see non-believers as a few steps ahead in terms of independent thought and debate. I might be generalising and I’m sure I don’t speak for everyone, but in general we do not want to go back to a point we have already surpassed.
So what now? Until I get an answer worth any weight, I propose the following: lets get along. This goes for both sides of the coin, religious and non-religious. I don’t want to be insulted and neither do you. The only way we can do this is if comments are limited to what it is you are asking, not Bible terminology or what is right or wrong – it is irrelevant. I want to increase my knowledge base; I don’t want to keep hammering the same story out over and over. If you choose to read a non-religious article, then understand that you elected to do so. It is of no help lambasting the author or its supporters. It really begs to question why religious folk even do so to begin with. There is absolutely no reason to prop up each other’s beliefs that are contradictory to someone else’s, all it does is separate and divide. You have your belief, let us continually rediscover our lack-thereof. For we do not hold belief, we are void of it; we prop up each other’s knowledge base and ideas. All these countless articles re-asserting belief, just so that all other believers can nod their head in acceptance. Let us understand that you have already accepted your truth. That you are happy with it and that no matter what you are told differently you will not be changing your mind. That’s the crux of it if we really think about it – you are already content in the truths that you have. There can be no debate for you – you can only accept it as such. We non-believers on the other hand, we do not accept. We question.
Now it comes down to whether I am saying believers and non-believers alike aren’t welcome to each other’s articles – and that is not at all what I am saying. In fact I welcome the fact that believers do visit articles that contradict their belief – however, I do not want those who are already convinced in their convictions of truth to harass anyone. As I described above, you have no place here. Those who seek more answers however, I plead with you to ask your questions. Don’t be offended with the answers, mull over it and accept what you feel is important from it. If you are still seeking answers where your text cannot provide, that is the kind of person I want reading my article. That is the kind of person I want commenting and this is the kind of person I want to invest my time into. It has gone on too long now where non-believers who have no other agenda but to educate, have been the butt of faith. We are not doing this to contradict you or belittle you – we are doing this out of our own free will and compassion as human beings to further your capacity for truth, in a scientific and ordered manner. I want you to join me in discovering the wonders of the universe, the meanings and lack of meaning, the absolute joys and tribulations of pure and proven enlightenment. Sounds much the same, as what you believers want doesn’t it? So then humour the non-believers who come to your article with questions in the same manner we will honour the believers. I do not want this fighting to continue. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for it all. It is silly and mundane, nearly childish.
I urge you all to really take a look at yourself and ask what it is your doing here. If it is to learn, in my eyes you are most welcome – if it is to sow hate and belittle people across an anonymous platform, I rate your time is up and rightfully so. Let us step up from this Stone Age ideology of you are right and I am wrong and lets discover together why we both are far away from knowing everything. I ask each and every one of you to stop what it is you’re doing and to think; just for a second what it is we are trying to gain from all of this. Whether you want to accept it or not we are here to stay, to share and to love. Allow us this and we will allow you it too. I want to help, but I cannot do so if I am confronted with people who do not want to – in my eyes – help themselves. This is not a ‘dream’ or an ideology, it is only so if you make it so. It can and will eventually be a reality. Lets us ensure it, together.
