Goodbye Sailor: I've been piped back on board

22 May 2014, 07:30
“The voice of the intelligence is drowned out by the roar of fear. It is ignored by the voice of desire. It is contradicted by the voice of shame. It is biased by hate and extinguished by anger. Most of all it is silenced by ignorance.” - Karl A. Menninger

On Monday I posted an number of comments on News24 articles which promptly disappeared.  After checking across a number of articles it became apparent that I had my rights to comment suspended again, perhaps because of some rude religious jokes I had posted the previous day.  Fair enough.  News24 has the right to do that although the language used was far tamer than that which appears in many MyNews24 articles.
Today, idly, and out of curiosity, I tested my ability to log in and post comments again and  “viola”, the right to express my opinions has been reinstated.   I have no doubt that the excellent article on freedom of speech by MerryMartin - and let me highlight the fact that she is a Christian: my sort of Christian - and the expressions of outrage over the denial of free speech from other commentators, including, I might add a few other Christians,  lead to a review and my reinstatement.

When I last looked Merry's article had been read by over 5000 people and attracted over 600 comments.

"I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds. Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” - Damien Hirst

The comments to the article clearly demonstrate the repugnant levels of crude, coarse, unseemly indecency and intolerance to which certain adherents of  evangelical Christianity have sunk.  One can appreciate how the mobs must have howled and mocked when the torture and public burning of heretics was  a religious sport.  They prove again and again what lurks in the shadows of the human psyche, how quickly the mob can lust and bay for blood, and how dangerous the delusional can be in large groups.

I am regularly, and often fairly,  attacked and accused of all manner evil doings.  I have my own fundie fan club who regularly accuse me of being rude (Correct, but no one has died of rudeness to my knowledge) , arrogant (undoubtedly as I am usually right), abrasive (I call a spade a shovel), angry (Who me?), full of hate (Silly), use circular arguments (a new one), hate speech (quite funny really), promoting violence (by a pacifist),  boring (but never ignored), a misfit (my wife agrees),  blasphemous (true),  disrespectful of others and their beliefs (true, respect is earned)  and a troll (a person whose opinions I do not like) who tries to shove his opinions on everyone else.  I am delighted that I attract such opprobrium from the loonies as it is very clear confirmation to me of the validity of the opinions, questions  and criticisms that I post and that I very effectively expose the fragile nature of so many dearly held religious fantasies.  Unlike the people who feel the need to retreat into such accusations because they are incapable of a credible response, such slurs do not bother me at all as I am very secure in my views and outlook on life and content with my achievements.  Of course making disparaging remarks  about my late mother is hurtful but then don't whine and cry foul if I treat you as an unbalanced, ignorant, unthinking, closed minded cretin.  Are you listening all you professional (we make our money peddling god) preachermen?

"I don't mind what the critics say, so long as I get some reaction. The worst thing is to be ignored.” - Les Dawson

News24 encourages people to comment on news items and to express their opinions in articles and generally does not interfere in the robust and free exchange of views which is why the readership continues to grow.  It is not a religious website and it you choose to publicly make religious statements, proselytise or express political opinions on a public forum then you must accept that those beliefs and views are just opinions and all opinions are open for criticism, questioning, mocking or debate.  As I have said many times before, all people deserve respect (until they prove otherwise) but not all opinions do.  And let's get this clear, no one, but no one, has a right to not be offended.

If you find my views offensive then please feel free to use the ad hominem if you can do no better but you are welcome to put  forward your own opinions.  But in doing so please take heed:

 - If you promote your religion as one of love and peace and selectively quote scripture to support your argument then I am entitled to highlight your hypocrisy by quoting back those many sections of that same scripture that promote rape, incest, violence and the murder of innocent women and children.  I am also happy to give your god a performance appraisal.

 - If you use scripture to justify expressions of hatred, homophobia, sexism or racism then I will educate you to the fact that you blatantly ignore many other commands in that same scripture.

- -If you make obnoxious racist or homophobic comments I will chide you for it and remind you that while people are free to accept or reject beliefs and opinions they are incapable of changing their ethnicity, physical appearance, gender or sexual orientation.

 - If you use this public forum to parade your piety by telling the world you are praying for the recovery of Michael Schumacher or the victims of a natural disaster I will call you out for doing so and remind you that your god allowed, or deliberately created, the disaster in the first place. Keep your religion to yourself and make as much noise as you like in church.  You will feel more secure there and no one will attempt to take away your noonoo blanket.

 - If you say you are going to pray for me I will tell you not to bother but to rather direct your energies at trying to help those who are less fortunate than I am.

Finally, do not forget that thousands of people read the articles and comments on News24 and do not  comment themselves.  I write for them and certainly do not set out to try and persuade the army of men in dresses, silly hats, snappy suits and bouffant hair who depend upon peddling snake oil for a living.  My objective is to drag them into the light so all can see and evaluate who they are and what they really stand for.  Thanks again Merry.  You did that very effectively.

“If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that... I believe in what I do, and I'll say it.” - John Lennon
