Graca Machel, Nelson Mandela and the concept Forgiveness

27 March 2014, 10:02

By: Sifiso Simelane

It is all over media that Graca Machel waives right to half Madiba's estate. Since she was given 90 days to indicate since the will was made public. And I must say that she deserves it and hope she must keep madiba legacy. However what is confusing for me is the fact that On February 3, Mandela's will was made public. It was first written in 2004 and last amended in 2008. Nelson Mandela's ex-wife Winnie Madikizela was left out she did not get anything .Madikizela-Mandela was Mandela's second wife. They divorced in 1996 after 38 years of marriage. This makes wonder “why” iam not going lie and say that I was there when the couple divorced I don’t know why they divorced I also don’t know anything pertaining to their marriage issues but I remember watching Mandela documentary when he called media briefing to say that he and Winne are ending things but “he will awlays love her” that’s according to the documentary. I want to assume that maybe the reason why winne did not get anything is because of that media briefing or is it the scandal involving the mandela football club that apparently Winne was accused to have murdered Iam not sure that just the thought only Winne and Mandela know the facts after all they were “lovers”.

From the above the is one thing I know and that the whole world knows is that Nelson Rolihlahla "Madiba" Mandela had certain principles like love, respect and forgiveness. For the purpose of this paper will stick with forgiveness that is defined as Forgiveness is letting go of the need for revenge and releasing negative thoughts of bitterness and resentment. Iam not implying that madiba had negative thouthgs towards winnne but iam saying since this concept was part of madiba even during transition to democracy he put emphasis on forgiving and working with the enemy. But why Winne didn’t even get a cent Madiba? She gave you childrens and she had to go through emotionally and politically trauma during struggle. Yes you divorced her but not even a cent where is forgiveness in this regard. I personally don’t agree with Winne political neither support her views.  But I believe the concept of forgiveness was supposed to be visible during Will that was announced.

Therefore the question that follows is that how to we defend madiba legacy and his principles? Well Graca machel can do that by doing the honourable thing by giving Winne something even if its one car or a house or money. Just to push madiba agenda of forgiveness and showing Winne that she is not forgeten by madiba family as she gave them beautiful daughters and supported madiba during struggle by so doing that mandela legacy will be defended. Well as I have outlined this are family issues and I don’t know the reasons why Wnnie did not get anything Iam writing here as outsider so I may be wrong but the context here is that forgiveness must be shown through giving Winnie something  that is just my personal opinion all in defending madiba legacy and his beliefs. It is not Graca who prepared will but it was Madiba he had his reasons of which I believe the madiba family,Graca and Moseneke  who is part executors of the struggle icon's estate knows . so what Graca now as main man in the Will cause of in community of property I regard her as the new MADIBA and that we must see in practice and that practice will be to look after Winne with a small “thing”.

As we continue to remember madiba we must also embrace his Principles. Siyakuhkumbula Madiba.
