On an evening that was overshadowed by second rate refereeing it still in my mind that we are playing far too stereo-typed rugby! The fact that HM made it clear that the ref was not to blame is a signal that we need to observe.
Firstly we saw Zane”Nik-Naks” Kirchner beaten 6 times in the air. Pienaar service when it wasn’t kicked away was slow again. At no time in play were we attacking the advantage line. The try by Bismarck was a text book drive from a lineout and was performed perfectly and left no doubt in a ref’s mind that it was a try. (Unlike Kieran Read’s try at no stage did the referee, linesman or TMO have a clue so why was that awarded?) The majority of the match was played with the usual standard of kick and chase/hope that there is an error. By now the AB’s have entrenched a line of players ahead of the catcher to shadow him and allow for a counter attack from deep.
The first scrum showed us that we definitely have the technique and should out-weigh any team in the future. Pieter de Villiers has done huge work with the tight five. He has been a good acquisition and awesome to see him back home where he belongs. I don’t see this new scrum law lasting until the World Cup, simply leaves too many problems for AB’s and Oz in future and it will be replaced.
Time to stop kicking ball away aimlessly HM. Let’s start creating pressure from our base that is the scrum and moving the ball wide again to allow the “Motto of the Springboks” to be a true reflection of Bok rugby. Let’s embrace our talent base and use them or lose them forever.
