Yesterday, while enjoying my morning walk through Tamboerskloof (Cape Town), I noticed how dirty the pavements and open spaces have become. Street people or “Bergies“ as we call them in Cape Town, were nesting everywhere. It almost appeared as if a wild animal could have been sleeping there, but sadly in this case, it was human beings.
That made me think…
Why do some people decide to dissociate themselves from society and go back to there primal, instinctive nature?
Astrology is a very refined science that can group people according to their time and place of birth. A signature chart can be very accurate in showing certain characteristics of a person. It can point out what comes easy for that particular person and what might be really difficult for that person. The Mayans, Egyptians and Chinese used it with great success. The Mayans use it to establish a person’s purpose for each life time. The Westerners use it to predict the future. I believe the proper application lies somewhere in the middle. I am not an Astrologer, but I do know enough about Astrology and Numerology to realise that people sometimes give their power away to the stars. I think that is the opposite of what Astrology is supposed to offer us.
I believe we are born with certain gifts for this lifetime, specific and unique gifts that only one person brings to this world and we need to share that with the world. My belief is that a soul decides before coming to earth, to bring along certain attributes. Some are natural talents, others are challenges. Challenges are also a very important part of spiritual growth, but we as “humans” so easily inclined to over-focus on the challenges and become negative of what is NOT working for us. In this process, we forget about our unique talents.
Let me pitch it in another way.
Imagine God or the Universe gives us each an empty box before coming to earth. Everybody gets the same size box. There is an enormous storeroom filled with talents and gifts. We can only pack in the box as much as the box allows. Some souls decide to take less; some decide to take many talents.
Once we have arrived on earth we cannot exchange any. We have to work with what we got.
Imagine it as Lego blocks for building a house. If you have chosen a certain amount of windows, doors, roof tiles and bricks; you have only that to work with. That means you are limited with what you have brought with, but not limited to what you can do with it. If you find the house too dark, rebuild it with more windows on the sunny side. Life is supposed to be this way. If we find something is not working out, change it.
Why do certain people decide to give up on life and play the victim?
I do not know, but I think it could be fear - the fear of the unknown. Perhaps the fear of change. Some people are just too scared to change anything in their reality, because if it does not work out they have to take responsibility for it. If we listen to the very successful people in the world, they will all tell us that it is due to many failures that they have decided to persist. And persistence helped them to succeed.
Our brains are amazing. It is the only organ which ages less if we keep challenging it. The brain has a characteristic of plasticity (neuro-plasticity). The more we use it the better it gets, constantly adjusting itself. It operates like a self-learning and self-programming computer. Science is therefore showing us that we have absolutely no excuse for escaping life. If it happens, it is due to our own choices and not external factors.
Change creates freedom.
If we keep challenging ourselves, the brain keeps reinventing itself, thus staying active and healthy. If we decide to repeat the same routine everyday; the same thinking everyday of what is not working for us, our brains create pathways that get so strong that it starts to run on “auto pilot.” Then we become fearful of everything that is outside of our neural pathways, taking away our freedom. This process leads to a life of endless suffering and a total disconnection from the wonderful “gifts” that we could have shared with the world.
Some people like the “Bergies” decide to do the extreme and go back to the most basic mammal instinct, not challenging the mind to expand or grow, but keep alive by just surviving what mother-nature can offer them on a daily basis. Some people decide to trap themselves in a certain belief system - creating a false sense of security, not asking questions – thus just do as the leader says. Some people decide to hang onto certain divinities such as Astrology to box themselves so they find it easier to believe who they are – thus not walking the journey of self discovery. Therefore not challenging the mind, not evolving, not growing spiritually.
If we believe we have a soul and we are NOT living what our soul intended, maybe we are then not honouring that contract with the soul.
God or the Universe does not reward us for good behaviour or punish us for bad behaviour. The Universe only gives us a constant supply of opportunities. What we do with it is our choice and we have the freedom of choice. We can make choices that are good for us and provide us with joy or bad choices that brings suffering. Sometimes we learn through suffering…sometimes not.
I have learned that the law of the Universe is: “That what we focus on we will see more of”.
We are such powerful beings; too complex to fully understand, but really well equip to live life simply to our fullest potential. No Astrology chart can give us what we need for this lifetime, it can perhaps guide us on this journey, helping us to remember what we have chosen beforehand.
The scope we have to live life to our fullest potential is unimaginable. Life can be fantastic or horrible. It is just a matter of that what we focus on.
