Halaal. A Possible way forward.

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) should take a lesson from Ian Moir, CEO of Woolworths. By publishing on Woolworth’s Facebook page an unconditional surrender on the Frankie versus Woolworth issue, Moir helped the company regain face and customers. It also had a very positive reaction to his leadership skills.

Individualism, personality and organisational differences, power politics and greed brought about the recent Halaal fiasco. The entire Halaal certifying process from manufacturer to consumer needs to be reviewed.

In some restaurants, takeaways and other food preparing outlets food is cooked and manufactured in terribly unhygienic conditions and unacceptable standards, sometimes with serious health consequences for unsuspecting consumers. Equipment, quality of products, sell by dates, ventilation, sanitation, and uniforms, items returned by customers and other checks and balances must all be regularly inspected.

The senior Scholars from every recognised organisation should meet under the banner of the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) and chalk out a standardised minimum criterion for certifying Halaal. These criteria should be implemented by all certifying bodies. Randomly some members from UUCSA must physically inspect the certifying process of these Halaal bodies. The Halaal certifying bodies must pay a monthly fee to UUCSA in order to meet spot inspection expenses like travelling costs, salaries and other related expenditure.

UUCSA must keep the public updated of these standardised Halaal criteria via a hotline, regular printed literature and other forms of mass communication.

Although it is not part of Halaal requirements, businesses must also be encouraged to keep prices of essential items as low as possible, pay their staff a reasonable salary and should carry out regular staff empowerment programmes.
