Here’s a novel educational idea
Neither English or mother tongue is going to fix our education system, it really has very little to do with the medium of instruction. It’s a topic in itself but it’s not going to change results or even address what’s plainly obvious to many. Coming from simple observation over a few years and similar insights from Shot’ lefting around the nation, I noticed a fairly simple and reasonable remedy for our educational problems as the plethora of school kids in shambled uniform dawdled past at 10 in the morning ( a very common sight) . It’s a novel idea but the idea is that students actually spend 6 hrs of the day in the class room being taught by someone who is qualified to do so .I know the 3-4months of holidays and strenuous ¾ day is a tough pill for both teachers and students but get that right and 95% of the problem is solved. Our education department is well funded compared to many (how it’s disbursed is another issue) yet produces some of the worst results on the planet. I can bet that like for like schools with differing results would be distinguishable along those criteria. When you have a problem that’s large and complex the best approach is to break it down into smaller manageable problems, solving them in priority. So get the kids doing the time in the class room with a teacher that can actually pass the subject they teaching and results will follow. From there dealing with public sector teachers unions, textbook delivery, a culture and academic excellence (ect) can be dealt with but what everyone has right on, is that something must be done because we are producing young adults that are hopelessly under prepared for tertiary education and almost only employable as menial labour. It’s not a silver bullet, but no such bullet exists so start somewhere before this embrace of mediocrity is entrenched.
