How do you eat an elephant? Look around you, consider your life and the situations you find/have found yourself in. How did you deal with them? Were you successful in resolving them?
One of the reasons we sometimes find ourselves unable to solve problems or deal with challenges in our lives is because when faced with the problem (the elephant) we try to eat the whole elephant in one bite! Seriously? My mother used to quote an old saying "there is only one way to eat an elephant...one bite at a time!"
So when you're faced with a situation that seems to be overwhelming, a challenge that looks like an elephant to you, remember that there is only one way to overcome it and that is one step at a time. One day at a time. One problem at a time.
Break the challenge down into smaller pieces and tackle it one bite at a time. Accept that some challenges take a bit of time and patience. The problem with jumping in with both feet is that we become overwhelmed by the enormity of the problem and then become despondent and eventually are likely to give up.
When you set a goal for yourself, understand that there are steps to be followed to reach your goal. For instance, if my goal is to obtain an MBA, I must understand and accept that there are steps to obtaining the MBA, I would have to attend classes/lectures, study, write exams, thesis and then graduate.
We live in a microwave society where we expect things to happen instantly and when things take time, we tend to become frustrated, abandon the project/goal/challenge and move on to something else.
Don't give up too easily, break it down and deal with your challenges/goals/situations one piece at a time!
Remember: winners never quit and quitters never win!
