How bad is McDonald's really?

09 January 2013, 13:12

Reading the article about Mr. Mornay Walters' discovery of a worm in his burger recently, and the subsequent bad service he received from McDonald's made me wonder how bad this fast food company really is.

In my opinion one of the best places to start looking in order to judge a company has to be hellopeter.com

Whilst looking at this customer service website I noticed a few interesting facts.

Given that I was looking at big companies in general, I read some amazing statistics on the hellopeter.com website!

An advanced search showed that amongst fast food companies, McDonald's received a whopping 862 online complaints in the last year! The second worst company is Mochachos with a very distant 80 complaints....

There seems to be a serious warning here to consumers. Stay away from McDonald's.

It would seem McDonald's is not the only large, multi-national company that does not care about their customers. Whilst looking broader, at all industry sectors, the following 10 companies were found to be wanting in their customer relations approach:

SARS - 257 complaints
City of Johannesburg Municipality - 257 complaints
Toyota - 271 complaints
Blackberry - 271 complaints
Mango airlines - 334 complaints
Volkswagen - 383 complaints
SAA - 453 complaints
Hyundai SA - 525 complaints
McDonalds - 862 complaints
Woolworths - 1349 complaints

Please note that a few companies, notably BMW, Ocean Basket, ESCOM and Audi just failed to make the top 10 list.

Anyway, what I find significant is out of the top 10 companies, three are vehicle manufacturers, two are major FMCG market players, two are airlines and the last one is in telecommunication.

The fact remains, McDonald's are really doing exceptionally bad. The ratio of compliments to complaints show them to be worse than Woolworths.

I think more people should investigate the companies they choose to buy from, and vote with their feet. There is really no place for poor performing companies who ignore their clients in our present economy.

I hope Woolworths and McDonald's (and the rest of those poor performers out there) take note.....
