My moms older brother, a real tough farmer type told me this story about me dad.
My dad came from the western Transvaal, where his dad was a farmer, and met my mother in Krugersdorp. On one new years eve a big party was held on the family farm and every one in the area attended. The mampoer was flowing freely and at some point late at night a fight broke out between two young guys, The one was very drunk and was kicked several times, while on the ground, by the other one.
My dad could not stand this whole affair and stepped in, telling the kicker that if he did not stop, he was going to get a serious hiding. The kicker, a local, simply ignored the young upstart, something he regretted soon afterwords. My uncle and his 5 burly brothers waited to see how my dad was going to handle the situation as the kicker was well know as a good fighter.
According to me uncle, my dad slapped him the first time and his face turned instantly to being blood covered. When he hit the ground my dad told him to get up as he was not going to kick him and apparently he did get up. This did not last long and he was on the ground from another slap moments later. The third time he got up was the last, as that slap ruined his face and knocked him out stone cold.
At that point my eldest uncle told the others that he though they should just allow my dad to get married to to my mom, as if they gave him trouble, they might also get the same treatment.
Years later my dad told me that he never hit anyone with the fist as that caused to much damage to the hand and he hated pain. As he was a wiry and tough farm boy at the time, a slap from him was not something to be taken lightly, so much so that my mom made him promise that he will never give any of us kids a hiding. Apart from a few playful moments he never lifted his hands to us or my mom, something which I strongly adhere to as well.
With all this violence and rape taking place in our country, I feel it is time that we also stand up and do the right thing, even if that means slapping a few idiots into a coma
...although I am sure a few kicks in the nuts will give a lot more satisfaction.
