Yes, you read that right - former wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan is officially launching a web hosting company, aptly named Hostamania.
Now of course, Mister Hogan doesn’t really have much expertise in this area so he is partnering up with a well-established web hosting firm, Tech Assets. Other brands that the company is associated with include WPzilla, Webintellects, ServFarm and Christian Web Host.
Tech Assets has been around the hosting game as early as 1997, so it is safe to say that Hulk Hogan will be well taken care of on this project. It is good to see that this isn’t just another celebrity vanity project and that Mr. Hogan has turned to seasoned professionals.
That being said, this decision begs the question: why web hosting of all things? Looking at the promotional video, a satirical jab at Miley Cyrus and her video for the song Wrecking Ball, leaves a person quite confused and reminds us just how old Hogan is and how long it has been since he was last considered a newsworthy topic.
Although I must admit that the idea of a master of flamboyant and shameless self-promotion the likes of Hogan spoofing a video of a modern attention-hungry and controversy-sparking former child star like Miley Cyrus is so absurd that I can’t help but laugh out loud.
In this regard the video seems to be doing its job pretty well and promoting the Hostamania brand successfully; it’s not something that you will easily forget.
The main selling point, besides Hogan’s highly recognizable image being associated with the web hosting provider, is the fact that, as Hogan himself puts it: “Making a website has never been easy, but with Hostamania, I’m getting back in the ring to make sure that anyone can set up a site”.
So from what we can tell so far, Hostamania is planned as an easy way to register a domain name and set up a quality website that will look good on both large screens and smaller screens on mobile devices. In addition to web hosting Hostamania will offer web design services as well.
The service is targeted mainly towards small businesses and individuals like bloggers or artists, who often lack the knowledge and resources to create a highly-functional and well-designed professional website.
Showcasing your art, work and products online comes at a price and it can be difficult to find a cost-effective web host – one that won’t be too hard on an average blogger’s wallet, but will still deliver a pretty good service. As Hogan’s people so eloquently put it: “Hulk Hogan is fed up with web hosts that overcharge and under-deliver, so he's starting his own hosting company - powered by 24-inch pythons, brother”. We can only hope that this will translate into good uptime and a very competitive price.
In keeping with his over the top wrestling persona, Hulk Hogan has already started calling out other big names in the hosting world. His first target was GoDaddy.com which had hired Jean-Claude Van Damme to promote the brand. In the video Van Damme does his signature splits while playing the bongos and the flute.
On the Hostamania blog, Hogan had this to say about the competition: “HOSTAMANIA is already being felt across the internet – the “other guys” have just hired a Hollywood kung-fu fruitcake to be their spokesman! Not even 24 hours after I announced the world of hurt I intend to put on these unreliable web hosts and they are running scared! Can you believe this, brother? They’ve got this little punk playing a rainbow flute on their homepage! How do you think a FLUTE is going to stand up to these 24 inch pythons?” – How indeed.
Ever the joker, Hogan has also posted a picture of himself playing the flute that he supposedly stole from Van Damme and extends an invitation to the Hollywood action hero to come and meet Hogan in the ring if he wants it back. With a little over 20 days left before Hostamania is online, Hogan is outdoing himself when it comes to marketing and promotion, but whether or not his service will actually be as good and as cheap as he is promising, only time will tell.
