“Even the Catholic Church now accepts Evolution”
The words were spat at me by a particularly dull humanist, whose sole purpose in life appears to be knocking religion by whatever shifty means it takes. In his addled mind, he was delivering a crushing blow to my love for God.
Well, Yes and No son, but mostly No
The Catholic Church has long held that there is no contradiction between “Evolution” and a belief in God. This is because, with all the Scientific resources at its disposal, the Catholic Church understands clearly that Evolution cannot and does not disprove the existence of God.
Everything rests on what you understand by the word Evolution.
Correctly, the Catholic Church has accepted that there is a lot of genuine, scientific evidence favouring a gradual development of today's life forms from primitive precursors. (Evolution) Therefore the Catholic Church now allows for the belief that the Earth and the Life it supports, evolved over time with God's guidance (Theistic Evolution)
But equally well, The Catholic Church knows that there is no credible scientific evidence for Life arising by a random, undirected physical process.(Abiogenesis or Atheistic Evolution)
Therefore, acceptance of Evolution in its true sense, does not for a moment mean acceptance that God did not create the universe and the life it contains.
Further, acceptance of Evolution (in its correct scientific meaning) is entirely compatible with essential Catholic doctrine that, inter alia;
All that exists outside God was, in its whole substance, produced out of nothing, by God.
God alone created the world.
God keeps all created things in existence.
God, through His Providence, protects and guides all that He has created
As a separate issue, it is true, that there is confusion around the words Intelligent Design, which (predictably) mean different things to different people. A few Catholic Theologians, who embrace Theistic Evolution, have gone on record rejecting Intelligent Design. Whatever the difference is in their minds, a rejection of ID certainly does not equate to an acceptance of Atheistic Evolution by the Catholic Church
That is just Humanism and propaganda.
