Is it due to a sense of lack of clarity and self confidence that we always need to identify with one or other political faction or group, and rather run with the herd than work out issues for ourselves and base our decisions on values and principles rather than being a member of a member.
Are we South Africans, most of us, not just a mere cowardly bunch of political gangsters who take sides depending on who will serve my narrow interest best?? Our children will one day, maybe they already have, lost respect for our "leaders" because many of our "leaders" will be remembered to have fallen from their lofty towers because of things like Travelgate (defrauding Parliament, and the Nation) tenders, corruption, self gratification at the trough of greed.
And even after 18 years into our liberation, the trough of greed is hogged by people who clearly lack the understanding of what liberation and freedom actually mean. The people occupying the front seats at the trough of greed are the ones who are still caught up in that slave mentality that says I will first drink and eat, me and my family and my friends. And we will create for ourselves a new hierarchy, a new elite that will appropriate for ourselves a status that clearly defines where the boundaries of privilege will be drawn.
The boundaries of privilege will be drawn to allow only those members who are very vocal members of the main member, the main actor, die mainy innie stuk. Those members who vowed to kill for the main member. Those members who were 100% members of the member. Those members who warned that the member was an unstoppable tsunami. Waars hulle nou???
Though the Alliance of Convenience seems to have disintegrated, and Humpty Dumpty seems to have had a great fall, and knowing that all the kings men and all the kings horses will never put Humpty together again, new humpty dumptys will be created to prop up the emperor. Our hard won liberation has nothing more to do with respect, appreciation and acknowledgement of the great leaders that have sacrificed and contributed to the vision of a free South Africa that belongs to all who love and live in it.
Sadly, its all about the emperor, and not the well being of our country and the people and the constitution and our freedom and the values and the principle and the legacy of our liberation.
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
Nelson Mandela
