Hydrogen is the simplest element and the most plentiful gas in the universe. At standard temperature and pressure, hydrogen is colourless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, nonmetallic and a highly compustible gas, with the molecular formula H2.
Fuel cells generate electricity using hydrogen and this terminology is termed as hydrogen and fuel cell technology. Hydrogen is used as an energy carrier will reduce the country’s dependence on imported oil and will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause global warming.
Hydrogen is the earths most abundant element bit is never to be found alone, it is always combined with other elements such as oxygen and carbon. Hydrogen can be extracted from virtually any hydrogen containing compound and is the ultimate clean energy carrier. South Africa has a 75% of the world’s platinum which is used in creating hydrogen, that means we are taking international innovation forward through global supply of platinum.
The energy generated by hydrogen fuel cells is clean. No environmental pollution results. The only interaction with the environment is the release of oxygen into the atmosphere. Exactly the same amount of oxygen is needed to recombine again with the hydrogen in the fuel cell where electricity is generated and water is released. It is thus a clean energy carrier for renewable energy. Click here to see it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAH5EvUB4V0
