“When you have children of your own one day, you will understand.” The words are out of my mouth before I can blink and suddenly my teenage daughter and I stand there staring at each other. She is utterly surprised at her mother’s serious lack of usual crazy reaction, and I could have sworn I just heard my own mother suddenly talking to my child.
When I heard those words for the first time as a teenager, my reaction was: “But you don’t understand mom! You don’t know what it’s like.” Which at this very moment is exactly the words my teenage daughter utters and I can not help but roll my eyes at her in true teenage fashion.
I get this awful pang of de-ja-vu as this exact same conversation plays itself out in my memory from years ago. But being the cool mother that I always promised I would be, I change my tactic. “Okay honey, if that is the way you want it, then let me get one first and after we can discuss how we both feel about it.”
There that should put her off that idea for a while. Being a “cool” mother requires that you are grown-up enough to know that you do not prance around with a belly ring, tattoo or piercings of any funny nature. So there! I will be getting a belly ring so my daughter does not. Hmmmm
All that just so I would not sound like my own mother. Very clever indeed! I salute you Mom! Maybe sounding like you sometimes might not be such a bad idea…
