Illegal eviction of residents

15 November 2012, 15:44
Letter to the Public Protector by residents of the Mashakane Township in Bela Bela.

The Public Protector
15 November 2012

Dear Sir,

Illegal eviction of residents of Mashakane Township by Bela Bela Council

You are requested to intervene IMMEDIATELY.

In October 2008 the Bela Bela Municipality and the Limpopo Provincial Government resettled about 200 families from the Farm Vingerkraal near Mabula, to Mashakane Township Radium.

The move took place with transport arranged by the Bela Bela Municipaltity. At Mashakane Township every family was handed a key for a RDP house. In some cases the keys were handed over by the Mayor of Bela Bela himself.

In August this year (2012) the Municipality called the residents together and said it was a mistake to give them the houses. It was in fact allocated to other people.

The Municipality gave them verbal notice to evacuate the houses in 90 days.

On Sunday 11 November the Bela Bela Council again called the residents to give them a final 7 days’ notice. Again NO documentation was given. No eviction notices or court orders.

The people are expected to move by Saturday 17 November.

There is NO alternative housing. I went there yesterday 14 November.

After 4 years they want to evict people that were legally given houses? With no where to go?

Please intervene on behalf of the residents. Please contact me or Mr. Shorty Kamongo- one of the resident that asked me to intervene on their behalf.

Mr. S Kamongo 071 058 1597 or Leon Bezuidenhout (on behalf of the residents
As daar iemand is wat kan help met 'n dringende hofinterdik laat my weet asseblief
