I watched the opening AFCON game between South Africa and Cape Verde. Wait, first I watched the opening ceremony which left me feeling blehh, maybe it was the weather. I had promised myself to go to at least one game, preferably that of South Africa since according to my friends I have no sense of patriotism at all. Well after last night I was reminded why I don’t.
Not only did South Africa have a goal less game with Cape Verde, our jersey also has some very suspicious colors that reminds me of the ANC. So throughout the game I kept asking myself “whose team is this?” Anyway that is probably just paranoia of the unpatriotic girl.
Although Cape Verde had a relatively delicious looking team, it did not take long to notice just how much they sucked! I am no soccer expert, but when the ball goes right and you kicked left, or there is about 5 meters between the ball and your head when you trying to perform a header, that tells me a couple of things.
Even the commentator dissed Cape Verde as its striker missed the post “It was a great opportunity…in his head.” Naturally by the time it reached 80 minutes and still no goals I realised I was wasting my time and changed channels to watch African American comedy.
My lack of excitement for this tournament is fuelled by the lack of planning that went into it. No huge announcement, no build up by having hunky soccer players just randomly take off their tops. So disappointing. And this commentator guy insists on asking me “do you believe” And in my head I keep answering “No! I do not believe!”
I still want to support the tournament though, it is an African one and we should be proud. So I will be screening all the teams, and the one with the best looking players will have me in the Stadium cheering them on. Until South Africa can score some kind of goal against a team of its peers.
