Intelligent Design: An Egregious Violation of The First Amendment

21 May 2013, 07:31

"The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances."

The sneaking attempts by Christian Fundamentalists to slither the teaching of ''Intelligent Design'' into schools in America is a direct attempt to subvert the 1st Amendment and is in direct contravention of the 1st Amendment.  ''Intelligent Design'' is NOT a scientific position.  It proposes nothing and can simply be expressed in the phrase ''God did it'' or as freethinkers like to say:  ''God Dunnit''.  It is unashamedly based on the "evidence"* of a Holy Book (ID is based on the Bible or the Koran) & attempts criticism of Darwin's Theory of Evolution.  The criticism is consistently invalid and remains so.  Therefore the teaching of ''Intelligent Design'' is essentially a Theist Position and an attempt to establish Christianity and/or Islam in schools as a state religion.  This is an egregious violation of the First Amendment More recently, in Aguillard v. Edwards, 482 U.S. 595 (1987), the Court decisively held that it is unconstitutional to require educators who teach evolution also to teach creationism.

I for one am very grateful to the Deist Founding Fathers for coming up with a splendid document that safeguards us against a state-mandated religion.

* = To use an analogy -- I can posit. that Father Christmas exists and has flying deer.  My evidence?  ''The Night Before Christmas''.  This is, of course, NOT evidence and neither is The Bible or The Koran.
