Is Religion overboard?

05 April 2012, 12:39

Is humanity making Religion walk the plank, to the point of going overboard?

All hands on deck, as we set sail to navigate through the treacherous seas of belief. These are uncharted waters, infested with sharks, so I shall not dwell deep into belief...curiosity of the unknown sometimes leads to death. Mankind...we have become pirates and privacy our craftsmanship. Several years back we found Religion adrift...we commandeered the ship, taking Religion hostage. After inventory of our latest plunder we bickered over on what to do with Religion, we pirates of different ethnic groups; our ambitions for holding Religion hostage are different. Obviously there is the general consensus of using Religion as leverage to get what we want from its embassy.

Our demands fell on deaf ears, so we opted for violence to amplify our voice...maybe than will be heard. We tortured Religion...but still the embassy remained firm, Religion’s bloodshed only affects those closest to it…the embassy is immune to empathy. They hear your cries, but they remain deaf to our demands…the pirates in anguish throw their hostage overboard.

The metaphor I have written in this article is merely to illustrate how certain individuals exploit religion to get their point across or make their demands known. We have seen the terrorist group Al Shabaab and Al Qaeda exploiting the Muslim faith to justify violence and terrorist acts. In the same breath politicians use religion as a tool to manipulate voters into voting or to exploit it for political gain. The embassy is this case is the government, government will never negotiate with terrorists, thus at times their decisions to not cooperate results in the death of innocence, but to an extent their reasons for not negotiating is understandable…but it should never come at the cost of human life. I will not dwell deep into the seas of belief as sharks of scrutiny will attack one’s opinion on the topic. All I can say is that we need to accept that there are many religions in the world…and it is up to us to safe guard our religion from pirates who intend to exploit it for other reasons. Be the life guard for Religion…when it goes overboard.
