As electioneering hots up, rhetoric and praise flood the print media, radio stations are filled with speculation, adulation or accusation and of course empty promises float in the wind like Chinese lanterns. Maybe there’s something in that … but I digress.
More than enough has been written about various political parties hi-jacking the real values which were fought for by the real leaders of the ANC, the ‘old guard’. If that were not sickening enough, it now appears that our great breeder/leader (pick one) has decided that in order to win the Western Cape he has to target the coloured vote.
As I understood it, and as stated in our Constitution, there should be no race criteria used, in pretty much anything. Affirmative action aside – that’s another story – how can President Zuma justify actually stating that the ANC will favour the coloured people who vote for them? The last time I looked, that’s racism. Yup – the dreaded ‘r’ word.
Funny how that useful ‘previously disadvantaged’ term can be bandied about so freely, and in particular target the coloured population, now that the ANC is maybe just a tiny bit concerned about obtaining a guaranteed majority.
I had thought, and I am sure I am not alone, that the non-racial state so dear to Madiba, and which is entrenched in our Constitution, actually means just that.
